Are you already dreading winter? Soon it will be freezing cold, slippery, and wet on our roads again. That can make riding a bike dangerous, both while riding and for your health.
In this blog post, we’ll share what you need to keep in mind when biking in sub-zero temperatures – from the right clothing to a defensive riding style to taking care of your bike. Ready? Then let’s get started!
When is it too cold to ride a bike?
Ultimately, you need to decide for yourself what temperatures you can handle in winter and which ones you cannot. Hardcore riders might feel comfortable riding at -10 °C or colder, while others might put their bikes away at the first sight of frost. It really depends on your personal tolerance to cold and the right gear.
Here are a few tips to brave the cold:
- Start slow and warm up: Your body takes longer to get energized in low temperatures.
- Pay special attention to your hands, feet, and head: These areas cool off quickly.
- Actual and perceived temperatures often differ: Wind chill can make the air feel colder than it does when you’re stationary.
- Invest in the right clothing: As mentioned, you definitely need specialized clothing when you plan to ride a bike in freezing temperatures.
Speaking of clothing...
1. The right clothing

Let’s start with the most important winter accessory: clothing. Here’s a quick overview of the essential pieces you’ll need to stay warm in freezing temperatures:
Wind- and water-resistant jacket and pants
Get yourself a winter jacket that's wind- and water-resistant. If you're going to be biking frequently in rain and snow, like on your way to work, it's worth investing in clothing that's windproof and waterproof (there are differences!). A good rain pant is also a worthwhile investment to ensure you arrive dry and warm.
Winter-specific bike shoes
For longer rides in unpredictable weather, consider getting specialized winter bike shoes. There are insulated models, true winter cycling boots, or just overshoes if it's not that cold. Make sure there's enough room for thick socks (or two pairs). We have tested some great winter cycling shoes for you.
Layering principle
In winter, it's all about the layered look – and you can use this while biking too. Multiple thin layers provide better insulation and flexibility compared to one thick layer. If you tend to get cold quickly, consider thermal underwear.
Our tip: Wear a long-sleeve functional shirt for your upper body, then a breathable jersey, and finally a wind- and waterproof jacket.
Warm gloves and socks
Keeping your hands and feet warm is essential while biking in winter. We recommend thick merino wool socks and warm bike gloves. If your hands get cold quickly, you might also want to invest in hand and foot warmers.
Neck protection
Keep your neck warm with specialized neck warmers or scarves to protect your airways.
Bike hat or headband
To keep your head and ears from cooling down too quickly, consider getting a specialized bike hat or headband. But be careful: don’t just wear any hat under your helmet, or it might shift in an accident.
Now you know the essential clothing pieces for winter. The next section is all about your bike – we’ll show you how to take care of it in winter.
2. Bike maintenance and equipment

Your bike is particularly exposed to harsh conditions in winter. Therefore, it’s important to conduct regular maintenance and keep it in good shape. Here’s how:
Proper winter maintenance
- Chain: Salt and moisture can damage the chain. Oil it regularly and use a special chain protector.
- Frame protectant: Salt and moisture are harmful to the frame and components. Corrosion protection sprays or special frame protection products can help prevent rust and damage.
- Cleaning: Clean your bike after each ride. It's essential to wash off salt – ideally using an absorbent sponge. Then dry it with a clean cloth.
- E-bike battery: If removable, store it indoors. Extreme cold can negatively affect battery performance.
- Tire pressure: Slightly reduce the air pressure to give the tires more grip.

Winter equipment
- Studded tires or winter tires: These will give you better traction on snow and ice. Read more tips from Sam Boardman on winter training.
- Powerful lights and reflectors: This will ensure good visibility even on dark days.

3. Defensive riding technique

A defensive riding technique is very important in winter. Keep the following points in mind to stay safe on the road:
- Ride slowly and anticipate.
- Maintain enough distance from other road users.
- Take turns slowly and avoid braking.
- Use a higher gear.
- Brake early and gently, as stopping distance is increased.
- Select an appropriate lane and avoid shaded areas where ice is more likely to form.
If you keep these tips in mind, biking in winter and on icy surfaces will be much safer.
4. Health

Biking in cold weather strengthens your immune system and releases endorphins! However, you should keep a few things in mind to avoid putting unnecessary strain on your body, such as:
Plan breaks: Regular breaks to warm up are a must. This way, you can handle longer distances.
Don’t stop for too long: However, these breaks should not be held outside! Otherwise, your body cools down too quickly, which costs unnecessary energy.
Protect your airways: Cold air can irritate your airways. Cover your mouth with a neck warmer or scarf to warm the air a bit.
Stay hydrated: Even in winter, remember to drink plenty while biking – regardless of how cold the water is in your water bottle (if you know, you know).
Biking in sub-zero temperatures? You can do it!
We hope we could ease your worries about biking in winter a bit. Riding a bike in the cold can actually be a lot of fun! Just make sure to dress warmly, ride defensively on icy surfaces, and maintain your bike regularly. And then winter can come!
