Canyon Grizl vs Trek Checkpoint vs Specialized Diverge: Which Gravel Bike, New or Used? (2026)
Short answer: the Canyon Grizl has the most tyre clearance (54 mm) and the most bike for the money, the Trek Checkpoint is the long-distance and bikepacking pick with in-frame storage and IsoSpeed, and the Specialized Diverge is the one to choose if you want built-in front suspension (Future Shock, 20 mm) for chattery gravel. On the used market the Grizl holds its value best and sells fastest: a carbon Grizl (2021–2025) typically sells for about €1,950 on buycycle within a median of 6 days. A carbon Diverge (2021–2025) sells for about €2,150, less than a new Diverge 4 Sport alloy (€2,299).
As of 3 November 2026. Used prices: based on more than 8,000 Grizl, Checkpoint and Diverge listings (all model years, e-bikes excluded) on buycycle, Europe's largest marketplace for used bikes.

Which generation is which? (model years for used buyers)
Each brand changed generation at a different time, so "2022" means something different on each bike. Check the generation before you compare prices. Canyon, Trek and Specialized all sold older builds for years, so the model year in a listing is only a hint.
| Bike | Model years | Generation | How to recognise it | Max tyre |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grizl | 2021–2025 | Gen 1 (carbon and alloy from 10/2021) | No down-tube hatch; Rudy suspension fork on the "Suspension" builds | 50 mm |
| Grizl | 2026+ (carbon from 07/2025, alloy from 05/2026) | Gen 2 | Down-tube hatch on carbon, semi-integrated cables, round seatpost on carbon, RIFT fork option, 1× only | 54 mm |
| Checkpoint | 2018–2021 | Gen 1 | Sliding "Stranglehold" dropouts | not checked |
| Checkpoint | 2022–2024 | Gen 2 (SLR, SL, ALR) | Fixed 435 mm chainstays, down-tube storage on carbon | 45 mm, or 2.1" 650b |
| Checkpoint | 2025+ (SL from 08/2024; ALR from 2026) | Gen 3 | UDH, front rack mounts, rated for 40 mm forks; no SLR (the race version is now the Checkmate) | 50 mm |
| Diverge | 2018–2020 | Future Shock 1.0 | Undamped first-generation Future Shock | carbon 42 mm, alloy 38 mm |
| Diverge | 2021–2025 | Future Shock 2.0/1.5; STR from model year 2023 | SWAT on carbon; STR has a rear shock | 47 mm |
| Diverge | 2026+ (09/2025) | Diverge 4 (Future Shock 3) | UDH, SWAT on alloy, no S-Works version | 50 mm |
Two traps. A Grizl listed as "2026" before May 2026 can still be a first-generation alloy bike. And a "2025" Checkpoint can be Gen 2 or Gen 3, depending on whether it is carbon (SL, from August 2024) or alloy (ALR Gen 3 only from the 2026 model year). Look for UDH and the tyre clearance in the spec to be sure.
Tyre clearance: 54 vs 50 vs 50 mm
The Grizl fits the widest tyres (54 mm). The Checkpoint SL and the Diverge 4 both take 50 mm, and fenders cut that down on all of them.
- Grizl Gen 2: 54 mm on 700c in every size, according to Canyon. Canyon says that fits cross-country MTB tyres up to 2.1".
- Checkpoint Gen 3: 700 × 50 mm (Trek, measured). The alloy ALR takes 42 mm with mudguards. Gen 2 took 45 mm or 2.1" 650b tyres; we found no 650b claim for Gen 3.
- Diverge 4: 50 mm with 7 mm of clearance on all sides, or a 2.2" MTB tyre with 4 mm of clearance (Specialized, via BikeRadar). TOUR lists 50 mm too. With mudguards, tyre width drops to 45 mm.
One data point to ignore: the price comparison site 99spokes still lists the Diverge 4 at 47 mm. That is the previous generation's number. The Diverge 2021–2025 took 47 mm.
Comfort: suspension fork vs IsoSpeed vs Future Shock
Three different ideas: the Grizl can add a suspension fork, the Checkpoint damps the seat tube, the Diverge damps the stem.
- Grizl: rigid on most builds. The RIFT builds (from the CF 8 w/ RIFT, €3,499 at launch) have a DT Swiss F 132 ONE fork with 40 mm of travel and a bar-mounted lockout. That is a short-travel mountain bike fork on a gravel bike, and it is the most capable option on rough descents. Gen 1 had a RockShox Rudy XPLR fork with 30 mm on the "Suspension" builds. Forks need regular service.
- Checkpoint: IsoSpeed, a decoupler where the seat tube meets the top tube, on the carbon SL. The frame is also rated for suspension forks up to 40 mm of travel (all sizes except XS). Cycling Weekly rated the Gen 2 IsoSpeed "not quite as forgiving" as the Canyon Grail's seatpost, so expect a gentle effect, not a suspension fork.
- Diverge: Future Shock, a hydraulic damper in the head tube with 20 mm of travel. Specialized has updated it to Future Shock 3 on the Diverge 4. BikeRadar lists version 3.2 (not adjustable, three spring weights) on the Expert, Comp, Sport and alloy models and 3.3 (adjustable) on the Pro and Pro LTD. Retailers list slightly different version numbers, so check the spec sheet. It has no lockout, which some riders miss when climbing out of the saddle.
Service: a Future Shock cartridge or a RIFT fork is a part that wears. IsoSpeed has only bearings and bolts to check. Ask used sellers when the damper was last serviced.
Geometry and fit: which is most upright?
The Diverge has the tallest stack, the Checkpoint Gen 3 the shortest reach and the Grizl the slackest head angle. All three moved towards more relaxed geometry in their latest generation.
| Mid size | Stack | Reach | Head angle | Chainstay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grizl, size M (AL 7 ESC) | 596 mm | 404 mm | 71.0° | 440 mm |
| Checkpoint SL Gen 3, size 56/ML | 601 mm | 397 mm | 72.0° | 430 mm |
| Diverge 4, size 56 | 610 mm | 400 mm | n/a | n/a |
Sources: Canyon geometry via bikeinsights.com (Grizl), bikepacking.com (Checkpoint, Trek chart), bikeinsights.com (Diverge, Comp). Sizes are not the same across brands, so compare by test-sitting, not by letter. Specialized has not published the Diverge 4 head angle in the sources we checked; it says the head angle is 0.5° slacker than before, the chainstays are 5 mm longer and the bottom bracket 5 mm lower.
Trek moved the Checkpoint to what it calls "Gravel Endurance" geometry: about 1 cm less reach and more stack than Gen 2. OutdoorGearLab called a Gen 1 aluminium Grizl the bike with "the longest reach of any bike we've tested" (2025), so if you are between sizes, Canyon's chart is worth reading twice. A claim you may have seen in AI answers, that the Grizl has the lowest stack, is only true against the Diverge: 596 mm vs 610 mm.
Weight, specs and new prices (as of November 2026)
Weights are within about a kilo of each other at the same price. New prices below are a comparison point only.
| Entry alloy | Price new | Claimed weight |
|---|---|---|
| Canyon Grizl 5 (Shimano CUES) | €1,299 | 11.3 kg |
| Canyon Grizl 7 ESC (GRX RX820) | €1,999 | 10.43 kg |
| Trek Checkpoint ALR 3 / ALR 5 | from €1,299 / €1,999 | ALR 5: 10.56 kg (BikeRadar, measured, size L) |
| Specialized Diverge 4 Sport alloy (E5 Sport) | €2,299 | 10.74 kg (size 56) |
| Carbon | Price new | Claimed or measured weight |
|---|---|---|
| Canyon Grizl CF 6 | €2,399 at launch | not checked |
| Trek Checkpoint SL 5 AXS | about €3,000 (retailers; RRP higher) | 9.5 kg (Trek, size ML) |
| Specialized Diverge 4 Sport Carbon | €3,499 | n/a |
| Canyon Grizl CF 8 w/ RIFT | €3,499 | n/a |
| Trek Checkpoint SL 6 AXS | €3,999 (2026 model, retailers) | 9.4 kg (Trek) |
| Specialized Diverge 4 Comp Carbon | €4,499 | 10.2 kg (BIKE, measured, size 58) |
| Specialized Diverge 4 Pro LTD | €9,999 | 8.01 kg (Specialized) |
New prices from Canyon (media centre, launch prices), Specialized (via BikeRadar, 9 September 2025), BikeRadar and German retailers. Canyon and retailers discount often, so check the current price. The 2025 Checkpoint SL 6 AXS had a list price of €4,599 (TOUR).
Specialized also still lists cheaper alloy Diverge models (99spokes shows an E5 at €1,549), which we have not compared here.
Two test verdicts help with the "is it any good?" question. TOUR tested the Diverge 4 Comp Carbon and called it "an impressive, extremely versatile all-road and expedition bike", but found the spec "rather basic considering the price". Cycling Weekly named a Checkpoint SL 7 (Gen 2, 8.9 kg) its "Best Expedition Bike" in 2023.
Bikepacking: mounts, storage and racks
All three carry a lot. The Checkpoint SL and Diverge carbon add a down-tube compartment, and on the Grizl only the carbon frame has one.
- Grizl Gen 2: more mounts and frame volume than Gen 1, front and rear rack mounts, and mounts for full-length mudguards. Canyon's range splits into the "OG" and the touring-oriented "Escape" versions with mountain-bike gearing. Carbon has a down-tube storage compartment; the 2026 alloy frame does not (TOUR).
- Checkpoint Gen 3: a bigger down-tube storage compartment on the SL, triple mounts on the fork, front and rear racks, hidden mudguard mounts, internal dropper routing.
- Diverge 4: SWAT 4.0 storage with a larger door on the carbon frame, and SWAT 3.0 on the alloy models. Specialized says that makes it the first alloy gravel bike with down-tube storage.
The Grizl and Diverge 4 are 1× bikes. The Diverge 4 can take a front derailleur but needs a wide 47.5 mm chainline, which standard road cranks do not have.

Direct sales vs bike shop: does it matter when you buy used?
Less than when you buy new. A used bike has no fitting or test ride either way, and warranty terms mostly stay with the first owner.
- Canyon: according to Canyon, the six-year guarantee on frame, fork, cockpit and seatpost is for the original owner and does not transfer. The statutory two-year warranty in Europe stays with the bike, so it can still apply for a bike under two years old if you have proof of purchase. Terms differ by country.
- Specialized and Trek: both give original owners lifetime frame coverage. Specialized's global policy lists a shorter term for later owners, counted from the original purchase date. Trek's terms we could not confirm, so read them before you rely on them.
In practice: ask for the invoice, and expect to use a local bike shop for service. Any shop can service a Grizl, a Checkpoint or a Diverge except for brand-specific parts, such as the Future Shock cartridge or the RIFT fork, which need the right tools and parts.
What do they cost used?
A used carbon Grizl typically sells for about €1,950, a carbon Diverge for about €2,150 and a carbon Checkpoint for about €2,385 (Gen 2) or €2,300 (Gen 3). The Grizl also sells much faster.

Typical selling price = median price of bikes actually sold. Value retained = selling price divided by the new price stated in the listing. Generation and material come from the model year and the listing title (entered by the sellers); e-bikes (Grizl:ON, Checkpoint+) are excluded. Figures mix frame sizes, conditions and trims, so treat them as a guide, not a price guarantee. Based on more than 8,000 Grizl, Checkpoint and Diverge listings on buycycle, European market, pulled on 3 November 2026.
What stands out:
- The Grizl sells about three times faster than the Checkpoint and the Diverge: 2 to 6 days against 9 to 21. That is good news if you sell, and it means that you need to act fast when a Grizl in your size appears.
- A used Gen 3 Checkpoint carbon costs less than a used Gen 2 carbon. That looks odd, but the mix explains it: Gen 3 listings are mostly SL 5 and SL 6, while Gen 2 includes the more expensive SLR. Don't compare the two rows directly.
- A used carbon Diverge (about €2,150) costs less than a new Diverge 4 Sport alloy (€2,299).
The newest generations have few used sales so far: the first Grizl Gen 2 carbon bikes sell for around €2,100 (21 sales, indicative only), and used Diverge 4 bikes are just appearing (about €3,000 for a carbon bike in the first listings, not enough sales for a reliable price).
Same budget: around €2,000–2,400
• Grizl AL 7 ESC: €1,999, alloy, 10.43 kg.
• Checkpoint ALR 5: €1,999, alloy, 10.56 kg.
• Diverge 4 Sport alloy: €2,299, alloy, Future Shock.
Used
• Grizl carbon 2021–25: typically €1,950, 50 mm clearance, carbon frame.
• Diverge carbon 2021–25: typically €2,150, Future Shock, 47 mm clearance.
• Checkpoint carbon 2022–24 (Gen 2): typically €2,385, IsoSpeed, storage in the down tube.
The trade-off: a used carbon bike is lighter and usually has the better groupset. The new bike has the newest frame features: 54 or 50 mm clearance, UDH, down-tube storage on the Diverge alloy and a warranty from the first owner.

What to check when buying used
- Future Shock (Diverge): push down on the bars with the brake on. The stem should move smoothly and return. Check the rubber boot for tears and ask about service.
- IsoSpeed (Checkpoint): look for play or creaking where the seat tube meets the top tube.
- RIFT or Rudy fork (Grizl): ask when it was last serviced, and check the stanchions for oil or scratches.
- Down-tube hatch: open it. The hatch should close properly and the seal be intact.
- UDH and rear dropout: UDH is only on the newer generations. Check the thru-axle and the derailleur hanger for a bend.
- Frame and bag rub: bikepacking straps can wear the paint and the carbon under it. Look at the top tube, down tube and fork legs.
- Invoice: you need it for the warranty and for the statutory two-year warranty on bikes under two years old.
Which one should you buy?
• Long days, ultra distance, in-frame storage: a used Checkpoint SL, Gen 2 for the lower price or Gen 3 for UDH and 50 mm.
• Hands and wrists first, chattery gravel, mixed road: a used Diverge with Future Shock.
• Racier: a Specialized Crux, Trek Checkmate or Canyon Grail instead of any of these.

FAQ
Is the Canyon Grizl better than the Trek Checkpoint?
Neither is better overall. The Grizl has more tyre clearance (54 vs 50 mm), a suspension fork option and the lower price. The Checkpoint has IsoSpeed and a bigger down-tube storage compartment on the carbon SL. Used, the Grizl sells faster and keeps more of its value.
Is the Canyon Grizl a good bike?
Yes. OutdoorGearLab named the Grizl 7 Suspension its "best bang for the buck" in 2025, and the Grizl has the most tyre clearance of the three. The downside: it is among the heavier bikes in its class and fits long in the reach for some riders.
Is the Trek Checkpoint a good bike?
Yes. Cycling Weekly named a Checkpoint SL 7 its "Best Expedition Bike" in 2023. It is designed for long days with luggage and has a more upright geometry in Gen 3.
Is the Specialized Diverge worth it?
If you want damping at the front without a fork, yes. TOUR calls the Diverge 4 Comp Carbon an "impressive, extremely versatile all-road and expedition bike" but found its spec basic for the price. Used carbon Diverges start at about €2,150.
Which has the most tyre clearance?
The Canyon Grizl Gen 2 with 54 mm. The Trek Checkpoint Gen 3 and the Specialized Diverge 4 both fit 50 mm.
What's the difference between Checkpoint Gen 2 and Gen 3?
Gen 3 (carbon SL from August 2024, alloy ALR from the 2026 model year) takes 50 mm tyres instead of 45 mm, has more upright "Gravel Endurance" geometry (about 1 cm less reach, more stack), UDH, front rack mounts and a bigger storage compartment. Trek dropped the Checkpoint SLR; its race bike is now the Checkmate.
What's new on the Diverge 4?
50 mm tyre clearance instead of 47 mm, Future Shock 3, UDH, SWAT 3.0 storage on alloy models, a 0.5° slacker head angle, 5 mm longer chainstays and a 5 mm lower bottom bracket. Specialized dropped the S-Works version; the Pro LTD is the top model.
How much is a used Grizl, Checkpoint or Diverge?
On buycycle, a used carbon Grizl typically sells for about €1,950, a carbon Checkpoint for about €2,300–2,385 and a carbon Diverge for about €2,150. Alloy bikes sell for about €1,000–1,300 (3 November 2026).
What gravel bikes are similar to the Trek Checkpoint?
The Canyon Grizl and Specialized Diverge, plus the Rose Backroad and the Cannondale Topstone. See also the shop pages for Canyon and Trek gravel bikes.
