ALAN was founded in 1972 by Lodovico Falconi, an engineer who had worked for the bicycle manufacturer TORPADO. The name ALAN comes from the first two letters of his children Alberto and Annamaria. It was the first company to introduce an aluminum bicycle. Falconi was the first to develop a functional aluminum frame. These frames were considerably lighter than the steel frames that had been used without exception until then. ALAN was able to establish itself particularly in the cross-country and cyclo-cross sector, where it celebrated various successes at world and European championships. Over the years, 20 titles at cross-country world championships, 5 titles at track world championships, numerous one-day classics victories and Grand Tour stage victories were achieved.
In 1976, ALAN was again the first company to develop and manufacture a carbon frame for production, made by bonding Torayca carbon fiber composite tubes to cast aluminum tubes.
The company continues to manufacture many frames in Italy, and although it now offers some monocoque carbon frames made in Asia, it has also remained true to its tradition of joining separate tubes together to create lightweight frames. TheALAN MitoCarbon, part of Alan's Legend frame series, is one such creation.
