Fons Multicolour Gravel bike
April 30, 2024
At Fons Bikes we have been building great bikes for great customers for almost 7 years. Together we create their dream bike and that process is special to go through. Again and again we hear arguments and ideas from our customers as to why they want just that one color. Sometimes it comes from a sugar bowl and bread bowl, then again from the favorite color from the closet, but also the color of their Porsche so it matches nicely, sneakers or even the beach of Tarifa. Often we can help with small steering based on our experience. What works technically well, what combinations don't work out as well on a bike and many other details. We see that those sources of inspiration are diverse and often surprising.
A new gravel demo bike
We are always allowed to create a few nice bikes ourselves for fairs, photo shoots and as demo bikes and sometimes we make what we call a 'Parts bin special'. Then we look at what we have in the warehouse and what we still need to make something special. Such was the case with this gravel racer, a Fons Multistrada. A project that started after we decided that a few of us will participate in the upcoming Traka in Girona. What do we need in what size, what stands out? Technically, we quickly figured it out; 80 percent of the route is unpaved, sometimes rocky and lots of climbing. So the right tires and gears were important, but we also want to stand out a bit among all the gems riding around there. Full-color and maybe even a bit of a 90's vibe. We still had one last Shimano GRX ltd edition in stock which in the beautiful polished finish can look very 90's and so would be perfect for this project.
A challenge for the team and the painter
While looking for inspiration for the colors, we came across a photo of Louis Vuitton's 2024 men's collection, the first collection created under Pharrell Williams' leadership as creative director. One of the models in those photos was wearing a bag that really inspired us and we grabbed that as a source. Together with the sprayer, we looked at how to get that nicely on a frame. And after a lot of work, masking and painting (all the details were sprayed), there was a fantastic result. Although opinions during Velofollies were divided, from too violent to insane and what a unique bike, it did become our most photographed Fons.
